The Benefits of Your Health Benefits

Many people in BC have coverage under extended health benefits plans for Naturopathic Medicine and yet are unaware of how they could use these benefits.  If a person is generally feeling quite good they may not think it necessary to book an appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor.  Here are 5 great reasons:

1)   Create a Custom Cleanse – we recommend twice a year doing a full body Cleanse that includes diet changes, remedies to support detoxification and reducing stress through simple lifestyle choices.  Have your naturopathic doctor design a custom plan fit for your specific health goals (Increased energy? Weight loss? Toning? Increased mood?).  From 1 – 4 weeks visits are best at the beginning, middle and end of a Cleanse where your doctor can monitor your progress and adjust as needed.

2)   Travel Support – If you have a special trip planned it’s wise to speak with your Naturopathic Doctor about remedies to support your health while on the road.  Airplane travel, cruise ships, backpacking and other forms of exploration all create different situations of possible difficulty and being equipped beforehand with preventative strategies really help limit surprises.

3)   Preconception Planning – If you and your partner are planning to have children in the next year or so then book for an appointment well in advance to begin some preconception planning.  Did you know some supplements show significant benefit if taken within the year prior to conceiving.  As well, some supplements should be discontinued during the same time frame.

4)   Update Your Daily Preventative Vitamins – Do you have a strong family history of Diabetes?  Or Heart Disease?  Do certain illnesses run through the family tree more than others?   Have you taken the same core vitamins for years without adjusting dosing, taking a break or discussing with a professional?  If so, your Naturopathic Doctor can help you update your regime to fit your family history and create a preventive strategy.

5)   Treat Infections – We are trained to prescribe antibiotics but thankfully don’t need to very often because our remedies work so well at treating infections of all types – respiratory, urinary, digestive, skin, ear, sinus etc.  be they of viral or bacterial origin.  Especially notable is how well they work for kids of all ages.  Any time we can prudently prevent the use of antibiotics then we are actually assisting in the growth and strength of the immune system.

If you are fortunate and have extended health insurance coverage, we encourage you to use them in ways that benefit both you but also your friends and family.  When one of us learns about preventive medicine strategies everyone benefits.
